The artists were commissioned to create work for the building. Performed
sequentially as a series of sound interventions, each work aimed to transform
the atmosphere of the auditorium in subtle, unexpected and compelling
ways.
The exhibition also included historical material written by John Earl
published as a copy of The Era. Please see the history pages for the text
and images from the paper.
Sarah Gudgin from the Museum of London conducted interviews with people
from Wilton's past. They can be listened to the the history audio page.
Opening in 1859, Wilton's was one of the most successful music halls
in London for over thirty years. Today it is a great rarity, historically
and architecturally, being the last remaining working hall in London.
Although the gas-burning chandeliers and mirrored wall-panels are long
gone, the auditorium remains remarkably untouched and a lingering resonance
of the hall's colourful past permeates the hall.
The Old Mahogany Bar was re-opened for the first time in 100years, co-run
by Martin from The Pitfield Brewery and artists Annie Davey and Luis Carjoval.
Martin served an original 1850 London Porter and Annie and Luis continued
their Puss and Mew London Gin project.
Janek Schaefer and Philip Jeck performed the London premier of 'Songs
for Europe' for the closing evening of the show. The Brick Lane Boogie
Boys performing on the opening night, and there was a sing-a-long in the
Old Mahogany Bar courtesy of Sing us an Old Song!
